Tournament Information

​

Western Cup XL runs March 28–31, 2024.

 

The Western Cup XL Badminton tournament is hosted by Apollo Badminton and will run over one (1) day: Saturday, March 30 from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

 

This tournament, and all Western Cup XL events, is hosted by members and allies of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and is a safe space for all people. There is zero tolerance for discrimination.

 

Tournament Structure

 

Apollo Badminton, with the support of Team Edmonton, is proud to announce and present the return of the Western Cup badminton tournament in well over a decade! We are proud to be part of the 40th milestone celebration of the longest-running 2SLGBTQ+ multi-sport festival in North America.

 

For the experimental relaunch of the badminton tournament, we will be featuring doubles competition only. 

 

We will be capping to 24 pair teams (48 participants), opened to any gender combination, any age, and any level. We invite badminton players from Calgary, Edmonton, and beyond our province to participate.

If you have a doubles partner, please include their name on the registration. Each doubles team member will need to register individually. Individual players will be paired based on skill level and preliminary round placement. 

 

Format

​

• Double matches only

• Preliminary placement round

• Individual players will be assigned different partners during the preliminary placement round. Double teams will keep their partners throughout the tournament. 

• Placement into at most 3 divisions based on matches and points accumulation

• Single elimination round

• Badminton World Federation Laws of Badminton applies

 

Equipment Information

 

• Tournament-sanctioned plastic shuttlecock will be provided

• Racquet (no rental will be available)

• Non-marking gym shoes are required

 

Registration Information

Individual registration: $50

 

Registration closes at 8:00am on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

 

Your Badminton registration includes:

 

• 2 matches in the Preliminary Placement Round; All 3 games to 21 points are played; best of 3 wins. Deuce is cut off at 30 points. All points in the 3 games are counted.

• Optional fun round for bonus points

  At least one match in the Single Elimination Round; Minimum 2 games are played; best of 3 to 21 points wins and advances. Deuce is cut off at 30 points. 

• Medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in all divisions.

 

Once payment is confirmed, you will be officially registered for the tournament.

 

The One Night in Monaco social event is included free of charge for everyone.
